      I would say it is not a strict requirement, however you do need to study every subject taught at school in order to pass your tests and enter a good college, which is crucial for you focused education.

      And this also teaches you a studying method, that is invaluable for research of any type, and in life in general, as you learn how to get the information you need also when the topic does not interest you so much.

      Even in college, where the subjects are supposed to be the ones you are most passionate about, there is a small chance you will find a module that is not so interesting to you, but you need to clear it anyway.
