Kieran answered on 11 Nov 2018:

Consciousness is the state or quality of awareness or of being aware of an external object or something within oneself. This means that we are consciousness when we are aware of what is around us in the world. We are unconscious when we are sleeping.

Their are also drugs that can make you unconscious. These drugs are used to put people to sleep for surgery.

Studies have shown that consciousness happens in the part of brain called the prefrontal cortex. This area is active when you are conscious.
