      Not much, to be honest. The salary of a PhD student is just enough to cover rent, bills, food and a little bit of leisure.

      Because scientific research is usually paid for by the government through tax payers money you don’t earn as much as if you worked for a private company. If you become a scientist and do research in a university you aren’t going to become rich, you do it because of your love of science and discovery, of course if you invent something which you can patent or start up your own company you can make quite a lot of money!
