3D printing is a viable way to produce the part. If you consider the traditional way to make a part is to forge the shape or mold the shape from molten metal in the foundry, then machine in the details, then apply coatings to increase the surface roughness so that bone will grow on or in, then 3D printing the part is in fact very efficient.
