      There are plenty of materials which can be used to make batteries that are not currently being widely used either because that material is too expensive, or further research needs to be done to improve the capacity of the battery.
      One material which comes to mind is Graphene and other 2-D materials.

      2-D materials are very flat,actually the flattest material you can get only 1 atom thick, graphene is made from carbon. Researchers who I work closely with are using graphene to make inks which you can print using a normal office printer, or stamp onto paper or plastic to make batteries !
